Gantry Cranes are overhead systems used for repetitive overhead lifting when there is room for an overhead runway system.  Gantry cranes are a type of cranes that run in a straight line above a dedicated working area.  This allows other vehicles such as trucks, scissor lifts, forklifts, to pass underneath through or around the crane.

What is a Gantry crane?

A Gantry Crane is a crane that is fixed to two rigid legs.  They are slightly different from bridge cranes in that they do not need to be tied in the supports of an existing bridge or building.  This eliminates the need for permanent runways beams or support columns.  Larger Gantry cranes can run on tracks or a rail system, but the most common type stands on free supported legs.  Smaller Gantry Cranes run on wheels or casters and can be moved about a facility for maintenance or light fabrication works.

What is a Gantry Crane used for?

Depending on the size of the crane they can be used for a wide variety of jobs.  Gantry Cranes are very commonly found in rail yards, shipping yards, container yards & scrap yards. They are also very popular in cement & precast applications for areas where they are forming or curating concrete slab.  Gantry cranes are good when speed is not an issue.

Gantry cranes don't have to rely on building structures and supports.  They can be built indoors or outdoors, they come in specs that allow them to be adjusted in height or in width. What size gantry crane do I need?

Gantry cranes are limited by certain factors.  What is the lowest overhead obstacle? What is the total span for the vehicle? What is the total rope fall? This could be a ceiling, a support, a girder, a roof, sprinklers, walls, pipes and many other things. Equally you need to consider the total height of the vehicle and whether it is adjustable.
