What is a crawler crane?

A crawler crane is a heavy duty crane that uses a lattice boom for heavy lifting jobs.  They are crane jib arms (lattice boom or telescopic) mounted to a base that can pivot.  They operate on two caterpillar tracks or ‘crawlers’ much like a tank does.  They move & turn by independently controlling the two tracks back and forth.  Due to their large size they tend to be transported and then assembled on site.  The set up time for crawler cranes is usually fast as there are only a few key components; they don’t have to be built in the same way as a tower crane.
